The goal of this series is to explore how the wisdom of Tantra translates into modern relationships. It is intended to inspire both women who are in relationship and those who are not by opening their eyes to the possibilities. I was moved to do this series because of my own awakenings and challenges in relationship.

Through Tantra I have seen and experienced possibilities between two people that are completely out of the context of our societies model for relationship. This delights me and it also raises new questions. I see this series as paving a new path of possibilities for women who have seen only limited openings in relationship and also women like me who are dedicated to their personal practice, dedicated to living intimacy and longing for sisters on the journey.

I often find myself imagining that there is someone who is out there who has ‘figured it all out', I would love for all of us to talk openly about the riches that we experience, what we know is available, as well as the unenlightened moments where relationship can reveal harsh truths that we had safely hidden from ourselves.

Ultimately, I have found relationship to be my greatest teacher. It has the power to expose me completely, to reveal the best of myself and open doorways to awakening that I have not felt anywhere else... it also has the power to humble me and highlight the parts of me that are controlling, judgmental, tight, etc. I want to share with other women the power of this path of love.

I hope to see you there and I wanted to share with you a very special, sensual ritual that will prepare you for a very intimate night together... I recommend doing this as a preparation for the event if you can make it, but even on it's own it is pretty exceptional.

Sensual Bathing Ritual

What I love about this ritual is that it is so easy to do and so sweet and rewarding. No matter how much stress you have been under or how challenged you have felt in your relationship you will find yourself feeling tender and open to your love after this.

In India, this ritual is performed before any sacred ceremony. It is seen as a cleansing process so that you enter into the ceremony new and available to be present. For our modern lives, this can be a valuable tool to cleanse ourselves from the day so that we can be fully present to our partnership.

What you will need:

epsom salts (so easy, you can buy them for a couple of bucks at your local drugstore) *ritual can be done without this
essential oils (I like lavendar or some kind of citrus...) *ritual can be done without this
if you can't find either of the above, you can do this with simply your favorite liquid soap as bubble bath to add that sensual atmosphere
a tupperware pitcher OR any shape container (unbreakable)
a soft sponge OR washcloth
liquid soap
candles
sensual music (check out www.myspace.com/aykannasound)

*you can add additional creative elements if you are inspired... rose petals and incense are always nice ;)

Now, the fun part. There are a couple of different ways to do this:

1. one partner can get in the tub to receive and the other can sit outside the tub to give (with no exchange, just as a gift of love)

2. both partners can squeeze into the tub together

Getting Started:

I recommend beginning by synchronizing the breath.

If you are both in the tub together, have the woman sit in front of the man, her back to his chest. He can wrap his hands around her waist and rest them on her belly.

If one partner is outside the tub, he/she can place their hands on either side of the receiving partner's heart.

Then begin to inhale together feeling the belly filling up like a balloon and exhale together. Continue this practice for 2-5 minutes. This will bring your bodies into harmony and you will become even more sensitive to one another's touch.

Moving on...

Now the giving partner will lather up the receiver. Once the receiver's body is soapy and slippery, use this to glide your hands over their skin, and massage in any way that feels good to you.

Gently guide the receiver to move so that you can soap up their entire body.

Once you have lathered and massaged them lovingly, take your Tupperware pitcher and use it to pour warm water over the receiver's body, rinsing and cleansing them. You can do this several times because the feel of the warm water pouring over their body will be a real highlight of the experience.

Now that they are rinsed off, you will either switch partners OR have the receiving partner stand and bring them a warm towel. Wrap the towel around them and pat them dry.

As the receiver, allow yourself to relax completely and enjoy being pampered!

A Puja is a prayer. In Tantra, our prayer is recognizing the divine in every human being, our temple is the body. In a Puja ritual each man will have the opportunity to partner with each woman for a simple exercise or meditation. The Tantric meditations use breath, movement, sound, and guided meditation to enrich each meeting throughout the ceremony. Attending Couples may choose to work solely with each other.

What is an orgasm exactly?

Most of us have come to believe that an orgasm is that moment after a build up of energy in our genitals when we experience a feeling of 'explosion' or 'release' and usually a drop-off in energy after. Often when we have this kind of orgasm, we create tension in the body and hold our breath in order to 'achieve' it. We are usually referring to a sensation from the past that we would like to experience, and we are dreaming of the future when we will again be filled with that rush of pleasure.....all fine, but what about being here and now?

Any meditator knows that the thought behind any and all forms of meditation, inculding Tantra, is to be totally present to what is happening NOW. The idea is that beyond our thoughts from the past or the future, lies the true bliss that this moment has to offer.

In Tantra, we say that we are actually orgasmic beings. Which means that when we are totally present to this moment, in our body, and we are free from tension and blocks, we are actually in an orgasmic state. WHOOPIE!

Suddenly, this makes meditating sound a lot more interesting...

So, if I am an orgasmic being....then why would I spend my energy trying to 'have an orgasm'? I don't need to. What would happen if when I experienced that feeling of arousal in my genitals instead of tensing my body and thinking of how I want to have an orgasm, what if I relaxed my body and allowed the arousal to show me a new sensation? One that is not based on the past or the future, one that is unfolding right here and now in my body.

The truth is that there is MUCH more pleasure available for us than we have allowed in. The Tantric meditations have been one of the tools that have allowed me to discover the pleasure in my body, but the most powerful discoveries have come from within. The moments when I have dared to relax my body and allow it to take me to the places that I may have been avoiding while I was heading for my precious 'orgasm'.

What my body has shown me is a sensation of aliveness running all through me, arousal encompassing my entire body, a feeling that I can best describe as sitting in the center of the 2-3 second orgasms I had become accustomed to. This pleasure can stretch out forever because it is simply my natural state, rediscovered. I can experience this state throughout my lovemaking, and beyond that I can experience it in everything that I do. Sipping a cup of tea, working at my computer, chatting with a friend. The only thing that is required is that I keep breathing, relax my body, and allow life to surprise me.

I asked some of my students what Tantra is all about and they came forward with the most amazing answers...below is the first of many.

"I have a strong conviction that there is an immutable kernel of goodness and love within each and every one of us. I also believe that we are all connected in the form of a Oneness or Spirit that is all of us and is at once more than all of us. I am seeing tantra as a way of connecting more consciously to that Oneness through the goodness and love that we have within us. It is a method of finding our way within to that love, and then to honor and join with the love within others, in a beautiful overarching Namaste.

It is not a stretch to verbalize that belief. It is much more of a stretch to follow it and not to be distracted by the maya and temptations in our everyday lives.

I loved what you said about sitting with whatever there is in the world and saying, "That's all right, there is no need for change, it is what it is and it is all good." I took that very much to heart and am working with it." ~Vicki

'Her Invitation'

HER INVITATION

"In his unending hungering thirst, he flits from flower to flower, drinking of her divine nectar. Driven by the scars of wounds within he seeks to fill, by his dance of sucking her dry. Again and again he penetrates Her; temporarily masking his pain and perpetuating the addiction. The unconscious cycle of raping the Goddess continues, as he always seems to need more.

Tattered and worn, the Feminine aches. Unnourished by his shallow presence and consumption; the soil of her soul is left parched and longing. She recoils, bathing in the sweet nectar of her own being.

The Feminine soul is nourished by His consistent offering of depth of heart. She knows that only with her deep trust of him will Her gifts emerge and will she fully blossom.

In her innate offering of Oneness, the delicate opening of the infinite Goddess is revealed. Her Divine fragrance invites him. He will be allowed to enter only with his true heart and depth of presence.
